Oh God, It’s Monday

Once a week; every week, it’s Monday. Horrible, horrible Monday.

During the 2016 global game jam, I have created a simple puzzle game together with a team of six other developers. The theme for this specific jam was Rituals, which we chose not to take too literally and went with the morning rituals that different people have.

In this game, your goal is simple: make sure everyone is done working at 5PM. Sounds simple, right? So what makes this game so interesting? You play all the co-workers and every co-worker has a list of tasks to complete, so you move your co-workers about the place making sure they are productive by completing their to-do list. The system records all your inputs, so that when you continue to the next co-worker, it takes over all the previous co-workers, essentially repeating step-by-step what you did when you were playing as them. That means the floor gets more and more crowded with colleagues roaming about, doing their things.

There’s a catch; when two co-workers meet, they start talking about all kinds of work-unrelated things, which isn’t very productive at all. So, you’ll want to try to make sure the office colleagues don’t run into each other too often, or they won’t be able to finish all their tasks before the clock hits 5PM.

This game had quite a lot of potential, since it had the possibility to create all sorts of interesting mechanics such as picking up an iPhone that renders you immune to all sorts of pesky chit-chat. The below video shows this system in action.
